So begins the first official coffee-related post!
Vivocity is Singapore’s newest and largest mall, right across the channel from Sentosa. Apart from the mall fare (clothes, clothes and clothes?) scattered around Vivocity are various restaurants, fast-food joints and several cafes. There is even a Boost Juice counter set up at the south corridor of the mall (do I need to mention I miss Melbourne?). Apart from smaller cafes (One called Corduroy – will review that one soon) The major cafe chains have also sprouted their stores – Starbucks, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Pacific Coffee House, Gloria Jeans.
From a quickie wiki (Heh.) , I’ve realised my assumption that G.J was a Australian brand is semi-true.
Gloria Jean’s Coffees began as a small coffee and gift shop in Chicago USA in 1979. Gloria Jean’s Coffees opened its first coffee shop in Australia in 1996. Gloria Jean’s Coffees Australia founders (Nabi Saleh and Peter Irvine) acquired Gloria Jean’s Coffees international master franchise brand and roasting rights for all countries (except the USA) in late 2004. The company which oversees Gloria Jean’s Coffees in the United States is Diedrich Coffee.
Anyway, we ordered a Cafe Latte and a Cafe Mocha as well. They had 2 Barista’s working the machine and it took a while as the store was busy. As I waited, I perused their pin-up board which had photos of latte-art apparently done by their in-store staff and some obligatory mugshot+nickname of their F.T and P.T staff.
Eventually it was my turn and the Barista pulled a nice little rosetta onto the Cafe Latte and a star on the Cafe Mocha. Not perfect but it was okay, because this was the first time in Singapore that I was served latte art in a chain. Don’t take me to court on that, but I’m pretty damned sure. That set my impression of G.J Baristas.
And how did the drinks taste? Pretty darned decent, none of the bitter burnt crap I’ve been enduring from teens on hols from other places. Which means we’ll be back again.
Price is your standard chain fare, S$4.00ish for a small.
Beans Score: 3 1/2 out of 5 – Try it.
